お蚕さんが人を育てる

「お蚕さんを育ててみいへん」という言葉を受けてはじまったお蚕さんと過ごす日々。

本書は、Good Job！センター香芝にお蚕さんが卵の状態でやってきてから、障害のある人とともにお蚕さんを育て、お蚕さんや桑について学び、養蚕や絹などの文化や歴史、絹糸を使ったものづくりに触れてきた体験をまとめたものです。

育てたのは、純日本産の「小石丸」という品種。繭は落花生のように中央がくびれており、一般的な繭と比べると3分の２くらいの小ささになります。

この「小石丸」のお蚕さんを育てることの周辺にある、祈りや表現、食、ものづくりなどに実験的に取り組むなかでメンバーやスタッフが感じてきたことや発見したこと。育てることを通して、私たちがお蚕さんから教えられたこと。お蚕さんという小さな生命からひろがる世界に触れ、私たちをとりまく自然と出会うことができる、そんな１冊です。

桑を植え、お蚕さんを育てる日々のようすを障害のあるメンバーやスタッフの声ととも記録している写真や文章を中心に、マンガやイラストなどでお蚕さんを表現したり、お菓子やお茶としての桑を楽しむなどの取り組みを紹介しています。

また、ものづくりを仕事とするGood Job！センターの強みをいかし、自分たちで制作した飼育や糸を挽くための道具や工夫などについても掲載。

グラビアの写真は都甲ユウタさん、お蚕さんの愛らしさ、桑畑のいきいきとした緑、メンバーがお蚕さんをていねいにお世話するようすを撮影していただきました。

お蚕さんのイラストやノンブルは花谷龍介さん、いつもお蚕さんとていねいに向き合い、かわいらしいイラストを描いてくれました。

It Is Silkworms That Raise Us

“Why don’t you raise silkworms?”

The days we spent with silkworms started from the remark by a friend of us, fabric-dyeing artist.

The book portraits the hands-on experience of raising silkworms with people with disabilities: we raised them from the eggs, learned about them, their food- mulberry leaves, the culture and history of silkworm farmers and its industry and created products using the silk thread made from the cocoons.

“Koishimaru”silkworm variety that we raised is a purely domestic silkworm in Japan. Compared to a typical one, Koishimaru cocoon is two-third of the size and has a narrow part on the center like a peanut shell.

Through new experience of raising silkworms such as silk-thread spinning, creative expression, food making and prayer, we felt and learned new things from them. The book will take you through a journey to a unique world spreading from a silkworm as a living entity and meet the nature surrounds us.
